Personal hygiene refers to the practices and habits that individuals adopt to maintain cleanliness and promote good health. When it comes to children’s personal hygiene, we parents play a major role in promoting and implementing these hygiene habits from a very young age. Some of the essential hygiene practices that parents should advocate to help their children maintain good health and hygiene are:
HANDWASHING
It’s the first and most important step in personal hygiene. It plays a vital role in reducing the spread of germs. Parents should encourage children to wash their hands before and after eating, after using the bathroom, after playing outside, after handling animals and anytime their hands are visibly dirty. Proper hand washing with soap and water and finishing it off with thoroughly drying their hands must be practiced.
ORAL HYGIENE
Good oral hygiene helps to prevent cavities, gum diseases and bad breath. We must encourage our children to brush their teeth twice a day with flossing at least once a day. Regular dental checkups are essential to maintain good oral health, also to remove the fear of going to the dentist which is a scary experience for us adults even now.

BATHING
Bathing should be done with soap and water, paying particular attention to areas where dirt and sweat tend to accumulate such as armpit, groin and feet. Bathing is the answer to maintain cleanliness and body odor. Body bath regularly is crucial to keep body odor and skin infections at bay.
HAIRCARE
Parents should ensure that children’s hair is washed using a mild shampoo to prevent the buildup of oil, sweat and dirt which in turn becomes breeding ground for Lice and causes dandruff. Children must be taught to comb their hair to promote tangles and a healthy scalp.
NAILCARE
Nails can be the store house of dirt and micro-organisms, which in turn and be the source of infection for our children. They must be trimmed on a regular basis. This can also prevent them scratching themselves or others by accident.
Establishing healthy habits and routines at a young age can help prevent illness and promote overall well-being. By emphasizing the importance of personal hygiene, parents can help their children lead happy, healthy lives.
